STOCKTON, Calif. –Sacramento State pitcher Shelby Voelz tossed a seven-hit shutout to lead the Hornets over the University of Delaware softball team, 6-0, Sunday afternoon at Bill Simoni Field as both teams closed out play at the Louisville Slugger Invitational at Pacific.

The Hornets, who improved to 8-8, opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning when Alyssa Nakken doubled down the rightfield line and came around to score on a double to rightcenter by Kelli Frye.

Sacramento State then took charge in the third inning with a four-run rally to take a 5-0 advantage. Kaitlyn Taylor delivered an RBI single up the middle for the first run of the frame, and two batters later Nakken drilled a three-run homer to left.

The Hornets tacked on an insurance run in the fifth as Nakken doubled to centerfield to drive home pinch runner Sade Estes.

That would be plenty of support for Voelz, who scattered seven hits and struck out four while improving to 1-1 on the season. Delaware starter Chenxi Jiao fell to 0-5 after giving up five earned runs on seven hits in 2.1 innings of work, while Hannah Rust was charged with one earned run in 3.2 frames of relief.

Blue Hen freshman first baseman Alicea Coy (at right) finished 3 for 3 at the plate while Michelle McKinnon added a pair of hits for Delaware, which dropped to 3-13 on the season.

Delaware returns to action on Friday when the Blue Hens take on DePaul and Florida International at the FIU Tournament in Miami, Fla.
