Blue Hens Open 2012 Home Schedule Wednesday vs. Temple; Host First Annual Delaware Spring Invitational This Weekend

Athlete photoNEWARK, Del. –The University of Delaware softball team will open its 2012 home schedule on Wednesday when the Blue Hens face Temple in a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader at the Delaware Softball Stadium, before hosting the First Annual Delaware Spring Invitational this weekend.

The five-team invitational features 10 games during the weekend including two on Friday, four on Saturday, and four on Sunday. Delaware (3-17) opens play on Friday by taking on La Salle at 1 p.m., followed by Norfolk State against Villanova at 3:15 p.m.

The Blue Hens also play the first game on Saturday when they take on Norfolk State at 9 a.m., followed by Villanova vs. Western Michigan at 11:15 a.m. Western Michigan will then face La Salle at 1:30 p.m., while the last game of the day will feature La Salle against Villanova at 3:45 p.m.

Western Michigan and Norfolk State will play Sunday’s first game at 9 a.m., before Delaware takes on Western Michigan at 11:15 a.m. La Salle then faces Norfolk State at 1:30 p.m., before Delaware and Villanova conclude the invitational with a 3:45 contest.

Fans attending Wednesday’s home-opening twinbill against Temple will receive the official 2012 softball schedule card, while a variety of promotions are scheduled throughout the weekend.

All service personnel (military, veteran, fire, police, and EMS) in full uniform or who present their service ID card to concessions will receive the discounted $5 price on the BBQ pork food platter throughout the tournament. Additionally, all service personnel are invited to take the field with the team(s) during pregame for the national anthem on Sunday during the invitational. Personnel must contact the Blue Hen marketing department by Thursday, March 15 to register.

On Saturday all fans can enjoy $1 off hot dog purchases from concessions, while during UD games this Saturday and Sunday fans can compete in Blue Hens Bingo with the winner receiving a gift card courtesy of National 5 & 10.

Additionally, kids ages 4-10 are invited to take the field with the Blue Hens and run the bases postgame during the Blue Hens’ games on Sunday.

Sophomore second baseman Michelle McKinnon is batting .333 this season for Delaware with team-highs of 20 hits and 12 runs scored, while junior centerfielder Lara Andrews is also hitting .333 with pacing the squad with 10 RBI. Freshman Jess Grisler has started at third base and batted leadoff during all 20 games this year, hitting. 290 with 18 hits and eight runs scored.
