NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware softball team was swept by Temple University 8-0 and 4-2 on Wednesday in the Blue Hens’ home-opening doubleheader at the UD Softball Stadium.
The Blue Hens (3-19) returned home after a 20-game season-opening road trip that saw the Blue Hens travel to California, Florida, and Virginia. Delaware will remain home this weekend when the Hens host the inaugural Delaware Invitational beginning Friday. Visiting Newark will be La Salle, Norfolk State, Villanova, and Western Michigan.
Up by two runs in the top of the seventh inning in the second game of the doubleheader, Delaware battled hard but surrendered the lead to Temple (9-8). In the final frame, the Owls sent 10 batters to the plate which resulted in four runs on four hits, including a key RBI double to left field by Christina Sykora.
Delaware’s third baseman Jess Grisler and second baseman Michelle McKinnon each collected a pair of hits in the loss. Lara Andrews (at right) knocked in a run on a first inning fielder’s choice while Marisa Newman knocked in a run with a sixth-inning sacrifice fly.
Capri Catalano (7-5) earned the victory for the Owls after the right-hander held UD to two runs on five hits, one walk, and three strikeouts in a complete game effort. Hannah Rust (2-3) suffered the defeat for the Blue Hens as the right-hander tossed a complete game while she registered four runs on six hits, two walks, and nine strikeouts.
In the first game of the doubleheader, Temple cruised to the 8-0 victory in six innings. Shortstop Sarah Prezioso led the Owls offense as she went 3-for-4 with a team-leading four RBI. Rachel Knable added two RBI while Meaghan Marley added two base knocks.
Blue Hens right fielder Gina Knutson and first baseman Kaitlyn Breneman registered UD’s only hits as Temple’s starting pitcher, Brooklin White (5-3), stymied the Delaware’s offense for the shutout.
Delaware starter Chenxi Jiao (0-8) yielded five runs over 1.2 innings with five hits and two walks. Brianna Jennings finished the game for the Blue Hens as the righty was charged with just one earned run on five hits and two walks.
