Blue Hens Play CAA Home Opener This Weekend When Delaware Hosts George Mason For Three-Game Series

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware softball team will play its Colonial Athletic Association home opener this weekend when the Blue Hens welcome George Mason for a three-game series at the UD Softball Stadium.
The Blue Hens and Patriots are scheduled to play a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday, which action on both days beginning at 12 noon.
Delaware enters this weekend’s action with a 5-27-1 overall record, and the Blue Hens are 1-2 in the conference. UD opened CAA action last weekend with three one-run games at Towson, falling to the Tigers 1-0 and 4-3 in 12 innings while posting a 5-4 win during the middle game. The Patriots are 8-23 overall this season, and are 2-1 in league play after taking two of three games at UNCW last weekend.
Sophomore second baseman Michelle McKinnon continues to lead Delaware with a .290 batting average this year, while freshman third baseman Jess Grisler is hitting .280 with team-highs of 30 runs scored and seven doubles. Junior centerfielder Lara Andrews is hitting .259 on the campaign while pacing the squad with 15 runs batted in, while classmate Gina Knutson is batting .242 with a team-leading three home runs.
Brooke Blankenship paces Mason with a .351 batting average while Samantha Barney is hitting .348, as both players rank among the top five in the league in hitting. Tori Dudley is batting .316 with team-highs of 30 runs scored and 17 runs scored for the Patriots, while Emily Lafferty has posted a .304 average while tying for the team lead with 14 RBI.
The Patriots lead the all-time series with Delaware, 35-32-1, although the Blue Hens took two of the three meetings a year ago in Fairfax.
