HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- University of Delaware freshman third baseman Jessica Grisler and junior righthander Chenxi Jiao were each named to the 2012 Colonial Athletic Association Softball All-Tournament Team after their performances at the championship last week.
Grisler (at right) went 3 for 4 during Friday’s 6-3 loss to James Madison, including a solo home run during the top of the seventh inning that was her second longball of the year. She also singled up the middle in the top of the third, and led off the sixth with a single to right field before scoring the Blue Hens’ first run of the contest.
Grisler, a CAA All-Rookie Team selection, led Delaware with a .305 batting average, 53 hits, 25 runs scored, and nine doubles during her freshman campaign. She started all 57 games at third base while serving as the Blue Hens’ leadoff hitter, and her 53 hits are tied for ninth most in a UD single season.
Jiao (at left) allowed just two runs on nine hits and struck out five batters in six innings of work while taking a hard-luck loss during the 2-1 loss to Hofstra on Thursday. She then surrendered six runs, four earned, on nine hits in 6.2 innings in the setback to the Dukes on Friday.
Jiao won eight games and compiled a 3.31 earned run average while serving as the Blue Hens’ top pitcher this season during her first year in Newark. Jiao’s 39 appearances in 2012 rank second in a single season at Delaware, while her 181.2 innings pitched are seventh most and her 128 strikeouts rank tenth.
Delaware, which finished its season with a 15-41-1 overall record and advanced to the CAA Tournament for the second consecutive season, returns every player except for graduating senior Rachel Jones for the 2013 campaign.
