NEWARK, Del. -- Senior centerfielder Lara Andrews, senior infielder Marisa Newman and senior pitcher/utility Amanda Stacevicz have been named 2013 University of Delaware softball team captains, third-year Blue Hen head coach Jaime Wohlbach has announced.
All three players served as team captains last season, while Andrews and Stacevicz were also captains during the 2011 campaign.
Andrews (above right) has started all 112 games in centerfield during the first two years of her Blue Hen career, including all 57 last season when she batted .231 while leading the team with 21 runs batted in. Andrews also ranked second on the squad with eight doubles, fourth with 34 hits and fifth with 13 runs scored, while her seven multi-RBI games were a team-best.
Newman (left) started all but one game in 2012 during her first season in Newark, including 20 at shortstop and 30 at first base. She batted .207 on the year with 28 hits and 10 RBI, while ranking third on the team with seven doubles.
Stacevicz (below right) returns to the field after sitting out the 2012 season with a shoulder injury, and is expected to be one of the Blue Hens’ top pitchers and hitters this season. She was a second team All-Colonial Athletic Association selection as a sophomore and junior, while earning Northeast All-Region honors in 2010. She went 11-9 with a 3.27 earned run average in the circle during her junior campaign and also served as the Blue Hens’ cleanup hitter, batting .258 while ranking second on the team with 31 RBI, eight doubles and three home runs.
Delaware, which has advanced to the CAA Tournament during each of Wohlbach’s first two seasons, opens its 2013 campaign with five games this weekend at the Jimmy John’s Lion Classic hosted by Southeastern Louisiana.
