Blue Hen Senior Lara Andrews Named CAA Softball Co-Player of the Week; Hannah George Earns Rookie of the Week Honors

RICHMOND, Va. -- University of Delaware senior third baseman Lara Andrews was named the Colonial Athletic Association Softball Co-Player of the Week while freshman centerfielder Hannah George earned league Rookie of the Week honors, the conference announced on Tuesday.
Andrews (Wellington, New Zealand/Sacred Heart College HS) batted .417 during the Blue Hens’ four games at the season-opening Jimmy John’s Lion Classic hosted by Southeastern Louisiana, leading the team with five RBI, five runs scored and three home runs. She went 1 for 3 with a walk and a run scored during the 4-2 victory over Lions on Friday, and finished 2 for 3 with a home run and two runs scored in the Blue Hens’ 3-1 triumph over Southern later that day.
Andrews (at right) was 1 for 2 with a home run as Delaware posted a 7-2 victory over Tennessee-Martin on Saturday, and capped her weekend by blasting a three-run walkoff homer in the bottom of the eighth inning during the Blue Hens’ dramatic 4-3 win over Louisiana Tech.
George (Auburn, Calif./Del Oro) led UD with six hits and a .600 batting average while ranking second on the squad with three RBI as she opened her Blue Hen career in impressive fashion at the invitational. She went 1 for 3 with an RBI single during the season-opening win over Southeastern Louisiana, and also had a hit in the victory over Southern.
George (at left) then recorded two hits and an RBI on Saturday against Tennessee-Martin, and added two more hits to go with a run scored and an RBI in the victory over the Lady Techsters.
Andrews shared Player of the Week honors with Bina Abbott of Towson, while Casey Rowland of UNCW was selected the league’s Pitcher of the Week. Andrews was also named the College Sports Madness CAA Player of the Week.
The Blue Hens, who finished a perfect 4-0 over the weekend, were the only unbeaten team at the tournament and were crowned champions of the Jimmy John’s Lion Classic. Delaware is off this weekend before returning to action on Feb. 22-24 at the Jacksonville University Invitational.
