Delaware Softball Heads South To Participate in Norfolk State Spartan Classic This Weekend

NORFOLK, Va. -- The University of Delaware softball team will look to build on its early season success as the Blue Hens will play five games at the Norfolk State Spartan Classic this weekend at the NSU Softball Field.
Delaware, which is 6-2 on the season, will face Norfolk State on Friday at 2:30 p.m., before the tournament officially begins on Saturday. The Blue Hens will take on Army at 9 a.m. and Marist at 11 a.m. on Saturday, before facing Army at 1 p.m. and the host Spartans at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
Live stats will be available for all five Delaware games this weekend. Live video is also available for $5 for a single game or $8 for a doubleheader pass. The passes must be bought the day of the game.
The Blue Hens are paced by freshman centerfielder Hannah George, who is batting .588 on the season with 10 hits and four runs scored. Senior third baseman Lara Andrews is hitting .400 with team-highs of 11 hits, three home runs, eight RBI and six runs scored, while freshman second baseman Tori Conrad is hitting .353 and freshman leftfielder Shelby Jones is batting .333 in the early going.
Fellow rookie Kiersten Coffman is 2-0 with a 0.81 earned run average to lead the UD pitching staff, while freshman Taylor Curran is 1-1 with a 2.33 ERA.
Norfolk State, which is 2-3 on the season, is hosting its second tournament in as many weekends. Alina Moriarty is hitting .375 with a team-best six hits and four runs scored for the Spartans, while Whitney Williams has a .357 average on the season. Jamie Schulle is 2-2 with a 1.88 ERA in the circle for Norfolk State.
Army is also 2-3 this year, and the Black Knights have not played since opening the season on Feb. 8-10 at the Auburn Tournament. Marina Northup is hitting .417 while leading Army with five hits and five RBI, while Christian McKone is hitting .400 with a team-high six runs scored. Braetana Roy is 3-1 with a 2.08 earned run average to pace the Black Knights pitching staff.
Marist will be opening its 2013 season this weekend, coming off a 28-27 campaign last year in which the Red Foxes finished fourth in the MAAC with a 9-7 league record. Danielle Koltz batted .314 with eight home runs and 39 RBI for Marist, while Emily Osterhaus was 11-10 with a 3.73 ERA.
Delaware is 10-2 all-time against Norfolk State, 9-3 versus Army, and 2-2 against Marist.
Following this weekend’s action, the Blue Hens will be back in the Norfolk area the next weekend to play four games at the Hampton Lady Pirate Classic on Mar. 8-10.
