RICHMOND, Va. -- University of Delaware senior righthander Chenxi Jiao was selected as the Colonial Athletic Association Softball Pitcher of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.
Jiao, a native of Beijing, China, went 2-0 and did not allow a run in 10.2 innings of work as the Blue Hens won three of four games over the weekend at the second annual Delaware Spring Invitational.
Jiao fired an eight-hit shutout during Saturday’s 1-0 win over Hartford, striking out one while not walking a batter. She then allowed just three hits in 3.2 innings of scoreless relief to earn the victory in the 7-2 triumph over St. Francis (Pa.) on Sunday.
Jiao is 5-2 with a team-leading 1.45 earned run average this season for the Blue Hens, as she has allowed just nine earned runs in a team-high 43.1 innings of work. Her 26 strikeouts rank second on the squad, and she is limiting opponents to a .254 batting average.
Jiao and the Blue Hens are 17-4 on the season, and had won eight consecutive games prior to Sunday’s 4-2 setback to Villanova. The weekly award is the fourth of the season for Delaware, as Lara Andrews was named the CAA Co-Player of the Week on Feb. 12 while Hannah George and Gabby Klecko have previously earned CAA Rookie of the Week honors.
Delaware remains home on Wednesday to host La Salle in a 3 p.m. doubleheader, before opening conference play this weekend with a three-game series at Drexel.
