Volleyball Continues Strong Spring Tournament Play with Three Victories at UMBC

April 14, 2011

Athlete photoCANTONSVILLE, Md. - - Playing in their second spring tournament of 2011, the University of Delaware volleyball team kept rolling as it swept its way through Bucknell, UMBC and George Washington hosted by UMBC this past weekend.

The Blue Hens opened the three match round-robin play with Patriot League foe Bucknell. Already playing and defeating Bucknell in their previous spring tournament at Navy, Delaware had a tougher time disposing of the Bison this time around, but ended with a 25-14, 26-24 victory to kick start their play.

The team’s toughest matchup came in their second match, as they played against host UMBC. The Retrievers, who made it to the America East championship game in the fall, forced the Blue Hens into playing their only other game into extra points in the first set, but Delaware came out on top, 29-27. The second game was just as close, as the Blue Hens kept their sweep alive by winning 25-23.

The Blue Hens finished the tournament with a game against George Washington, another team they met previously this fall. Delaware earned its revenge against the Colonials after they dropped their only set of the spring to GW at Navy. Delaware took both sets, 25-20 and 25-19.

Some of the Blue Hens returners were key throughout the tournament, as setter Renee Tomko placed balls nicely for outside hitter Alissa Alker. Middle Chelsea Lawrence was a force at the net, leading the Blue Hens defense to the three victories.

Delaware will see its next action this weekend, as they host a play-date with the University of Pennsylvania on Sunday at Barb Viera Court in the Carpenter Sports Building. Action is scheduled to start at 11 a.m.
