Blue Hens Close Out Spring Competition by Welcoming Penn to the Carpenter Sports Building

NEWARK, Del. - - Setting its sights on another Colonial Athletic Association championship and an automatic berth into the NCAA First Round in the fall, the University of Delaware volleyball squad finished it 2011 spring competition on Sunday with a play-day against Pennsylvania on Barb Viera Court in the Carpenter Sports Building.

The two teams used each as practice mates, completing drills for the first half of the competition.The Blue Hens and the Ivy League competitors then played a pair of 25-point games before settling with a final 15-point set to close out the day.

The Blue Hens took both sets of the opening 25-point games, 25-18 and 25-18, but the visiting Quakers took the final 15-point game 15-13.

Delaware, which won the 2010 CAA regular season title and the Tournament Championship on its home court in the fall, finished its spring practices this week and will look to carry their success into the summer and fall for another season. Prior to this weekend, they won all their matches at a Navy spring tournament, as well as all the matches last weekend at UMBC.

“We have made good progress this spring,” reigning CAA Co-Coach of the Year Bonnie Kenny (at right) said following the play-day on Sunday. “Our entire team has put forth an overall great work ethic this spring. We need to work on having better ball control and our middle transition, but overall its good progress.”
