NEWARK, Del. -- Looking to repeat as Colonial Athletic Association regular season and tournament champions, University of Delaware volleyball seniors Kim Stewart (top right) and Renee Tomko(bottom right) have been selected as captains for the 2011 season, head coach Bonnie Kenny announced Monday.
The Blue Hens defeated Northeastern in the CAA Tournament championship last fall and earned the conference’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament to cap off the 2010 season.
Kenny coached her team to one of the best seasons in program history as the Blue Hens finished 26-6 overall while winning the CAA regular season (13-1) title. The Blue Hens’ season came to a close in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in a 3-0 setback against Virginia Tech.
Delaware also captured CAA Tournament titles and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2007 and 2008.
Stewart (East Kentwood/Kentwood, Mich.) returns for her senior season as the lone three-year letterwinner on the squad. She has started each of her previous three years and will again be looked upon as an outside hitter in2011.
A six-rotation player, Stewart was second on the team in digs (346), digs per set (2.91), and aces (35), while ranking third in kills (302), kills per set (2.54), total blocks (62) and points per set (3.11) last season.
During her career as a Blue Hen, Stewart has been named the CAA Rookie of the Year, a third team All-CAA selection in 2008, and a second team All-CAA selection in 2009.
Tomko (Thomas Jefferson/Jefferson Hills, Pa.) steps into the starting setter role for the first time as a Blue Hen after transferring from Louisville following the 2008 season.
Playing behind two-time CAA Setter of the Year Jess Chason, Tomko amassed 50 assists in 19 sets in 2010. She set a career-high with 14 assists in two sets against East Carolina in the 34th Annual Delaware Volleyball Invitational. She also posted double-digit assists in a set twice, including 11 against ECU in the third game. Her other double-digit figure came against UNC Wilmington as she recorded 10 in her only set of a 3-1 victory.
Delaware opens a challenging 2011 campaign on the road with its first match on Aug. 26. The Hens will take on Rice and nationally-ranked Stanford in Houston, Tex. as part of the Rice Tournament before coming home to battle Oregon on Aug. 30 for the home opener at 7 p.m. on Viera Court.
