RICHMOND, Va. -- Junior middle hitter Chelsea Lawrence did not commit an error while leading the University of Delaware volleyball team to a weekend sweep of Hofstra and Northeastern, earning her the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week award announced Monday by the conference office.
Delaware (16-12, 9-3 CAA), the four-time defending league champion, reclaimed a share atop the CAA standings this past weekend, defeating Hofstra, 3-1, on Friday night before beating former leader Northeastern, 3-0, on Saturday night. Delaware and Northeastern now share the league lead with 9-3 marks with the Blue Hens holding the tie-breaker thanks to sweeping the Huskies in two meetings this season.
The award is Lawrence’s first CAA weekly honor of her career, and the second time this season a Blue Hen earned the CAA Player of the Week. Kim Stewart earned the weekly honor on Oct. 10. Alissa Alker won the CAA Defensive Player of the Week award on Sept. 19 as well.
Lawrence led the Blue Hens in the two victories by collecting 19 kills while needing only 32 swings to reach that mark. She did not commit an error in either match, finishing with a .594 hitting clip. She also recorded eight blocks during the two matches that helped Delaware regain control of its own destiny to host the CAA Tournament later this month.
On Friday against Hofstra, the Evanston, Ill. native picked up eight kills on 16 swings and added four block assists and a solo block. Lawrence also contributed an assist and a dig in the four-set victory.
The following night, the junior shined on Senior Night, collecting a team-high 11 kills on 16 attempts. Lawrence hit .688 for the match, gathering another three blocks and adding another dig in the first-place showdown against Northeastern.
The Hens have one more regular season weekend of action left before the six-team CAA Tournament begins on Nov. 18 at the site of the regular season champion. The tournament winner earns a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
Delaware will square off against James Madison in Harrisonburg, Va. on Friday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. before heading to George Mason on Saturday for its regular season finale at 5 p.m.
