RICHMOND, Va. -- Looking forward to locking up the top seed and the right to host the upcoming Colonial Athletic Association Tournament, University of Delaware junior volleyball outside hitter Alissa Alker took things into her own hands during the final weekend of play to make sure the Blue Hens were on their own court for the second year in a row.
Alker powered the Blue Hens (18-12, 11-3 CAA) to a weekend sweep over James Madison and George Mason, earning her the CAA Player of the Week award announced by the conference office Monday.
The San Diego native, who was also named the CAA Defensive Player of the Week back Sept. 19 this season, put on an offensive show this weekend to earn the first CAA Player of the Week award of her career.
In Delaware’s five-set victory over James Madison on Friday, Alker had a career night, posting her first 20-20 performance of her career. Her 24 kills and 21 digs was the first 20-kills/20-digs performance in program history since Kelly Gibson accomplished the feat on October 14, 2007.
The 24 kills were also a career high as she needed 57 attempts to reach the mark. Alker committed only three errors on the night, finishing with a .368 hitting percentage. The 21 digs were the most by Alker this season, and the most since she collected 22 on Sept. 19, 2010, against Santa Clara.
The six-rotation player stood out in other areas on the court as well that night. At the net, she denied on attack by herself, and contributed on four block assists as well. On 22 serve reception attempts, she did not make an error. She also finished with one service ace and an assist for a team-high 28 points.
On Saturday, the junior followed up her career performance with eight kills and six digs in a straight set sweep over George Mason. Alker also tallied three block assists, two aces, and an assist in the match that officially secured the team’s third straight CAA regular season title.
For the weekend, Alker averaged 4.00 kills per game, 3.38 digs per set and added 1.00 blocks per set for an outstanding 4.94 points per frame over the two matches.
Alker will help lead the Blue Hens in the CAA Tournament starting this Friday, November 18 at 4 p.m. at Viera Court. The Blue Hens will look to defend their CAA Tournament Championship starting on Saturday in the semifinals at 7 p.m. when they face the winner of Friday’s matchup between No. 4 Georgia State and No. 5 James Madison. The winner of Sunday's championship match at 5 p.m. will earn an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
