University of Delaware Volleyball Squad Opens 2012 Season with 3-0 Setback to San Diego State

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The University of Delaware volleyball squad battled tough in the second and third games of its season opener Friday night but could not extend the match and fell to host San Diego State 3-0 in the opening round of the Aztec Invitational at Aztec Court in Peterson Gym.
The Blue Hens (0-1), the two-time defending Colonial Athletic Association champions who have advanced to the NCAA Tournament four times in the last five seasons, will close out the tournament Saturday afternoon when they take on No. 17 ranked California at 4 p.m. (ET).
San Diego State (1-0), which returns five starters from a team that went 16-16 a year ago, posted the victory by set scores of 25-13, 25-20, and 29-27.
After hitting negative .034 in the first game, Delaware battled back in the next two but could not pull out a win. San Diego State hit .316 for the match, including an impressive .469 mark in the first game.
Junior Katie Hank (at right) led the Blue Hens with 12 kills and two-time All-CAA hitter Alissa Alker, playing in her hometown, recorded six kills and nine digs. Freshman Mackenzie Olsen contributed 25 assists while freshman Ariel Shonk added 13 digs.
Alker, a senior, moved closer to the coveted 1,000 career kill plateau and now needs just four to become the 17th player in school history to reach the mark.
Of the 10 players used by head coach Bonnie Kenny, five were freshmen.
The Aztecs got a balanced effort as Michelle Waber collected 16 kills on the night while Andrea Hannasch and Summer Nash each contributed 11 with Hannasch hitting .643 for the match. Johnna Fouch and Chloe Mathis dished out 24 and 20 assists respectively.
