CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Freshmen are making an immediate impact for the University of Delaware volleyball team this fall and never was that more evident than on Friday as a trio of rookies led the way as the Blue Hens picked up their first victory of the season with a hard-fought 3-1 win over Lehigh.
The victory came in the opening round of the Holiday Inn Jefferson Cup Tournament hosted by the University of Virginia at Memorial Gymnasium. Delaware (1-2) will continue action at the tournament on Saturday when the Hens take on Western Kentucky at 11 a.m. and the host Cavaliers at 7 p.m.
Like Delaware, Western Kentucky advanced to the NCAA Tournament last season.
Blue Hen freshman Katie Hillman contributed 16 kills, six blocks, and 19 points, Mackenzie Olsen dished out a season-high 43 assists and added seven digs, and Ariel Shonk recorded 30 digs as the Blue Hens knocked off the Engineers (1-1) to post the team’s first win of the season.
All four sets of the match were decided by four points or less. The Hens opened with a 25-21 victory in the first set before Lehigh came back with an identical 25-21 win of their own. But Delaware then put the match away as they knocked off the Mountain Hawks by scores of 25-22 and 25-21 for the 3-1 win.
Delaware received a balanced attack at senior Alissa Alker (at right) added 11 kills and 16 digs and Katy Hank chipped in with 11 kills and four digs.
