RICHMOND, Va. -- University of Delaware freshman libero Ariel Shonk was named the Colonial Athletic Association Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week as the conference handed out its weekly awards on Monday.
Shonk, a native of Atlanta, Ga. (Riverwood International Charter), led the Blue Hens in digs during both of Delaware’s matches last week, a pair of 3-0 victories over Morgan State and Georgia State. She posted a match-high 15 digs during Tuesday’s win over the Bears, and paced UD with 19 digs in the triumph over Georgia State on Saturday.
Shonk, who averaged 5.67 digs per set on the week, leads all CAA freshmen with 293 digs this season. She is averaging a team-high 5.43 digs per set, which is good for third in the league, and has led the Blue Hens in digs during all but one match.
The award is the first of Shonk’s career and marks the second consecutive week a Blue Hen has been honored by the CAA, as freshman setter Mackenzie Olsen was named the league’s Co-Rookie of the Week last Monday.
Shonk and the Blue Hens close out their three-match homestand on Tuesday when they host Delaware State in the Route 1 Rivalry at 7 p.m. at the Bob Carpenter Center.
