RICHMOND, Va. -- The red-hot University of Delaware volleyball squad, which ran its win streak to five matches with a perfect 3-0 record last week, was honored by the Colonial Athletic Association this week as senior Chelsea Lawrence was named the CAA Defensive Player of the Week and Ariel Shonk was tabbed the CAA Rookie of the Week.
The Blue Hens (8-11, 3-1 CAA) moved into sole possession of third place in the CAA standings thanks to victories of 3-0 over Delaware State, 3-2 over UNCW, and 3-0 over William & Mary that were spearheaded by Lawrence and Shonk.
Lawrence (top right), a 6-1 middle hitter from Evanston, Ill. (Evanston Township HS), had an outstanding week at the net as she totaled 24 total blocks for the week, an average of 2.2 per set. Lawrence had a season-high nine blocks in the win over Delaware State Tuesday night, but bettered that in the next match when she had 13 in the five-set victory over UNCW, just two shy of the UD match record and the most by a UD blocker since 2010.
Lawrence, who added two more blocks Sunday in the Hens’ 3-0 victory at William & Mary, collected 21 kills and hit a team-best .283 for the week. She reached two milestones during the week, surpassing the 500-kill and 250-block marks for her career.
Shonk (at left), a 5-9 libero from Atlanta, Ga. (Riverwood International Charter HS) was honored for the second straight week as she earned CAA Defensive Player of the Week laurels a week ago.
Shonk recorded 63 digs last week to lead the CAA. She began the week with 13 digs on Tuesday against Delaware State to go along with three assist and three aces. Over the weekend she recorded match-high digs in wins at UNCW and William & Mary with 29 and 21 respectively. Shonk ranks second in the CAA in total digs with 356 and leads the Blue Hens with 5.48 digs per set.
Delaware will return to action this week with CAA road matches at James Madison on Friday night at 7 p.m. and at George Mason Saturday night at 7 p.m.
