RICHMOND, Va. – For the 14th time in her young career, University of Delaware sophomore guard/forward Elena Delle Donne has earned weekly women’s basketball honors from the Colonial Athletic Association, this time being selected as the conference’s Player of the Week on Monday.
Delle Donne, a Wilmington, Del. native (Ursuline Academy), dropped 36 points in Delaware’s season opening 59-44 victory over visiting UMBC. Her point total was the fourth-most in a single game in school history and the record for most points in a season opening game. Delle Donne now holds a piece of the top six single game scoring records for the University.
The early childhood education major outscored UMBC in the first half, with 19 of her own points while the Hens held a 29-18 advantage at the break. Delle Donne (at right) finished the game going 13-of-29 from the field, including four of eight from beyond the arc. She recorded a perfect day at the charity stripe, going six for six. Delle Donne pulled down seven rebounds, tying her for second on the team and helping the Hens to a 48-31 advantage on the boards. Delle Donne played in 39 against UMBC, a minute and a half more than her season average of 37.5 minutes last season.
Delle Donne, who has appeared on the Preseason Naismith National Player of the Year Award, Wooden National Player of the Year Award and Wade National Player of the Year Trophy Watch Lists, as well as earning votes for the Preseason All-America Team, was tabbed the CAA’s Rookie of the Week on 10 occasions, while also being named the Player of the Week on three occasions last season.
Delaware has now won seven consecutive season openers, and improves to 14-1 under 15th year head coach Tina Martin in home openers.
The Blue Hens look to improve to 2-0 when they take on BIG EAST opponent Villanova University Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in the Bob Carpenter Center.
