Blue Hens Move Up Nine Spots to No. 15 In CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Poll

Athlete photoBOSTON – Jumping out a 2-0 start, the University of Delaware women’s basketball team moved up nine spots in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Poll, which was released Tuesday evening, moving the Hens up to the No. 15 spot from No. 24.

Delaware is one of three Colonial Athletic Association teams named in the poll, closing in on James Madison, which fell from third to ninth after suffering a 69-64 to Hampton in the opening round of the Preseason Women’s Invitational Tournament. Old Dominion University moved up from No. 11 to the fifth spot after a come-from-behind 65-63 victory over Georgia Tech. Virginia Commonwealth received 68 votes in the poll.

The Blue Hens garnered 248 points in the poll, which released just prior to Delaware’s 69-62 over BIG EAST opponent Villanova Tuesday night. Old Dominion picked 627 and the Dukes picked up 447.

In addition to the CAA opponents, the Ivy League's Princeton was ranked No. 4, picking up 641 points. Delaware will face Princeton on Dec. 1. Also receiving two votes was the Patriot League's Navy, who Delaware will play on Dec. 5.

The Mid-Major Poll is made up of teams from the following conferences: America East, Atlantic Sun, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, Great West, Horizon, Independents, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mid-Eastern, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Summit, Sun Belt, West Coast.

Delaware has now started the season 2-0 twice in the last three seasons, while Preseason All-American Elena Delle Donne has scored a combined 70 points in each of the first two games, averaging 35 points per game.

In the win over Villanova, a pair of Hens, Delle Donne and fellow sophomore Danielle Parker (above at right), recorded double-doubles. Delle Donne posted 34 points and grabbed 12 rebounds while Parker buried 11 points and had 11 boards.

As a team, the Hens shot an impressive 48.1 percent from the field, while also going 15-of-18 (83.3 percent) from the charity stripe.

The Blue Hens hit the road for the first time this season when they travel to New Haven, Conn. Delaware is set to square off with Yale University Saturday night at 7 p.m. in the John J. Lee Amphitheater.
