November 18, 2010
NEWARK, Del. – University of Delaware women's basketball head coach Tina Martin announced Wednesday that junior transfer Sarah Acker has been granted a waiver from the NCAA and will be eligible to play for the Blue Hens beginning this Saturday at Yale.
"We are excited that Sarah has the opportunity to get on the court and make a contribution to our team," said Martin, whose team is off to a 2-0 start and ranked No. 15 in the latest collegeinsider.com Mid-Major Poll. "She has worked hard in the pre-season and should add strong support to our frontcourt.”
A 6-4 center, Acker, who transferred out of nearby Saint Joseph’s for personal reasons after playing one game in the 2008-09 season, will add depth for the Blue Hens on the post. She attended Luzerne County (Pa.) Community College during the 2009-10 academic year but did not compete.
The Nanticoke, Pa. native (Greater Nanticoke Area) had an outstanding rookie season with the Hawks in 2007-08, starting in 30 games, appearing the all 31 contests, and led the team to a 17-14 overall record and helping the team advance to the Atlantic 10 quarterfinals. For her efforts, she was the first Saint Joseph’s freshman to be selected to the All-Philadelphia Big 5 first-team, while also being named the Big 5 Rookie of the Year. In the Atlantic 10, Acker earned third-team and all-rookie honors.
During that season, Acker, a sociology major, led her team in rebounding on 24 occasions, while also becoming the first freshman to lead the team in points per game (11.9), rebounding (8.7) and blocks (46). She also set the freshman record for rebounds (271), which ranks eighth all-time. Acker’s 46 blocks that season are the fourth-most all-time at Saint Joseph’s.
Acker finished her rookie campaign leading the Atlantic 10 in field goal percentage (59.6), and third in rebounds and fifth in blocks. She was named the Hawks’ Best Offensive Player, and earned Hilton Philadelphia Hawk Classic All-Tournament Team accolades.
The Blue Hens head to New Haven Conn. this Saturday to take on the Bulldogs of Yale. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. at the John J. Lee Amphitheater.
