Blue Hens Selected No. 24 in CollegeInsider.com Preseason Mid-Major Poll

BOSTON – Coming off of a 21-12 season in 2009-10 and a berth in the Women’s Invitational Tournament, the University of Delaware basketball team earned 147 points, ranking them No. 24 in the CollegeInsider.com Preseason Mid-Major Poll.
Delaware was joined in the poll by fellow Colonial Athletic Association teams James Madison, which was selected third with 656 points, including seven first place votes, and Old Dominion was No. 11 with 369 points. Gonzaga was selected as the top team in poll, picking up 709 points with 12 first place votes. Green Bay landed in the No. 2 spot with 693 points and 11 first place nods.
In addition to the CAA, the Mid-Major Poll is comprised of teams from the America East, Atlantic Sun, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Great West, Horizon, Independents, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mid-Eastern, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Summit, Sun Belt, West Coast.
Virginia Commonwealth and Hofstra each received votes, with VCU picking up 61 and the Pride earning one.
The Hens return four starters from last season, including All-American Elena Delle Donne, who was named the league’s Preseason Co-Player of the Year with James Madison’s Dawn Evans.
In the 2009-10 CAA Tournament, the Blue Hens reached the semifinals, falling to eventual runner up Old Dominion before earning their bid to the WNIT.
Last season, the Hens averaged 62.7 points per game, while holding opponents to a league second-best 58.0. Delaware averaged a conference-best 34.3 defensive rebounds, picking up 1,131 through out the season.
Under the direction of Tina Martin, who begins her 15th season at the helm of the program, the Blue Hens open their season on Nov. 12 when they host the Retrievers of UMBC. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Bob Carpenter Center.
