SHENZHEN, China – Thanks to a strong team defense and three players in double figure points, including University of Delaware women' basketball All-American Elena Delle Donne, Team USA knocked off Great Britain 85-33 Tuesday at the World University Games.
Delle Donne, a Wilmington, Del. native, dropped in 10 points in her 19 minutes of action, going four-of-10 from the floor. She also converted both of her free throw attempts. The rising junior added six rebounds, including five on the defensive side. She also logged two steals and one blocked shot.
Delle Donne (at right), who owns the team's highest scoring average (12.3 points per game) and rebounding average (7.7 per game) in pool play, got to see some familiar faces in yesterday’s game, squaring off against three opponents from other Colonial Athletic Association schools. Playing for Great Britain are Old Dominion University’s Becca Allison and Mairi Buchan as well as Drexel’s Renee Johnson-Allen.
“I noticed yesterday when I saw them in the village, I was like, ‘I know these girls’ " said Delle Donne. "Two of them are on ODU’s team and one was from Drexel, so it was pretty cool out there playing with girls in my conference (in international play)."
Up next for Team USA, which won Pool B with a perfect 3-0 record, will be Finland, which finished as the runner-up in Pool A. The Americans and the Finns will play on Thursday at 8:30 a.m. (Eastern Standard Time).
Finland advanced to the quarterfinals with a 2-1 record, finishing behind group winner Taiwan, who like the USA, went 3-0 in the group.
The USA vs. Finland winner will face the victor of the Australia (3-0) vs. Canada (1-1) matchup. The Australia vs. Canada game will be played at the same time as the USA vs. Finland game.
