NEWARK, Del. -- Sophomore All-American Elena Delle Donne continues to collect accolades, becoming just the second player in University of Delaware women’s basketball history to earn a spot on the College Sports Information Directors Association (CoSIDA) District II Academic All-America Team.
One of just 10 players named to the academic team in the University Division in District II, Delle Donne, a 6-5 guard/forward, joins Lori Howard as the only two UD players to be named to the CoSIDA Academic Team. Howard was a third team selection during the 1980 season.
Delle Donne, an early childhood education major at the University, carries a 3.55 grade point average. She was the only player from the Colonial Athletic Association to be named, and is the only sophomore in the University Division.
This is the second time Delle Donne has received academic honors. In her rookie season in 2009-10, the Wilmington, Del. native earned a first team spot on the CAA’s All-Academic Team and the leagues Academic Honor Roll.
Averaging 25.2 points per game, the best in the country, Delle Donne missed 11 games this season and is being treated for symptoms associated with Lyme disease. Her points per game average leads the country, but she has not played in the requisite 75 percent of her teams games to qualify for the national statistical standings.
Delle Donne was also named to several national Player of the Year watch lists, including the Wooden Award and the Naismith Award. She was named the league’s Preseason Co-Player of the Year, while also being placed on the Wade National Player of the Year Trophy Watch List.
She was also tabbed as the CAA’s Player of the Week for Feb. 7, the 3rd time this season Delle Donne earned the weekly honors and the 13th time in her career.
