RICHMOND, Va. -- For the fourth time this season, and second time in as many weeks, University of Delaware sophomore All-American Elena Delle Donne was tabbed as the Player of the Week, according to a release from the Colonial Athletic Association on Monday afternoon.
Delle Donne, a 6-5 Wilmington, Del. native, had an impressive week, leading the Blue Hens to a 2-0 record, playing both contests of the road.
The Preseason Naismith Player of the Year Award candidate tallied 54 points, including 33 against William & Mary in an overtime thriller. More than half of her points in that game came at the free throw line where Delle Donne converted 17 of her 19 attempts, setting Kaplan Arena records in both categories.
It seems no record book is safe from Delle Donne, who also tied for third in points in the arena, and had six blocks, tying her for fourth in the arena. Delle Donne’s 17 free throws made in the game are tied for the second most in CAA history, while her 19 attempts tie her for sixth in a single game.
She was a beast on the boards as well, pulling down 21 rebounds during the two games, allowing her to average a double-double for the week (27 points, 10.5 rebounds). Eight of her rebounds came on the offensive glass, helping the Hens post 30 second-chance points during the week.
Delle Donne concluded the week with a 36.8 field goal percentage, including going six of 14 Thursday night at Towson. At the charity stripe, Delle Donne turned in a 26-of-30 week.
The Blue Hens look to avenge a late January loss against George Mason Thursday night at the Patriot Center. Earlier this season, Mason defeated Delaware by a narrow 51-48 edge.
