Delaware To Host National Girls and Women In Sports Day on Sunday

NEWARK, Del. -- On Sunday, Feb. 6, the University of Delaware will host its first annual National Girls and Women In Sports Day (NGWSD). The event will take place in Delaware Field House, beginning at noon and lasting until 1:30 p.m.
Free to all young Blue Hens fans in 8th grade or younger, participants will interact with UD women’s athletics student-athletes and coaches in sport-specific fun, play in a bounce house and receive a goodie bag.
Young Blue Hens fans will also take part in poster making to support Delaware as the Hens battle Colonial Athletic Association rival Drexel University. Tipoff for the game is slated for 2 p.m. in the Bob Carpenter Center, and all participants registered for the NGWSD event will receive a complimentary ticket to the game.
Fans wishing to participate in the NGWSD can register for the event using the online form or by completing the fax registration form and sending it 302-831-8653. All registrations are due by noon on Thursday, Feb. 3.
Sunday’s game will be a special event, as the University will honor the 10-year anniversary of the 2001 women’s basketball team, which won the America East Tournament and earned an automatic qualifier to the NCAA tournament.
In addition to the NGWSD, the game will also serve as the Girl Scout Day. All girl scouts not registered for the NGWSD can purchase a ticket to the game for $5.
Following the action on the hardwood, the entire current UD women’s basketball team will be signing autographs on the concourse behind sections six and seven.
National Girls and Women in Sports Day began in 1987 as a single event in Washington, D.C. to honor Olympic volleyball star Flo Hyman. Since then, the day has grown into a nationwide celebration across all 50 states. The day can always be attributed back to the work Hyman did as an athlete and for her work to assure equality for women's sports.
Hyman died of Marfan syndrome in 1986 while competing in a volleyball tournament in Japan. Since then, NGWSD has become a day to acknowledge the past accomplishments of female athletes and recognizing current sports achievements of women in sports.
