PinkZone Shoe Auction Raises Nearly $900 for Kay Yow Cancer Fund, UD School of Nursing

NEWARK, Del. --Sporting pink 2010 Nike Hyperdunks, the University of Delaware women’s basketball team helped raise nearly $900 following the Hens game against James Madison University on Feb. 20. Four pairs of game-worn shoes were autographed by the team and sold in a silent auction in conjunction with the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association PinkZone initiative.
Through the silent auction, the Blue Hens raised $896, which benefited both the Kay Yow Cancer Fund and the University’s School of Nursing. Each pair of shoes was autographed by all 15 student-athletes Delaware participated in the WBCA PinkZone initiative and wore the pink shoes during its game against the Dukes.
During the 2011 PinkZone campaign, the Kay Yow Fund, named after former North Carolina State head basketball coach, has received over $85,000 in donations towards breast cancer research. Overall, the WBCA Pink Zone has raised nearly $3.3 million, has reached almost 2.7 million fans, and has unified over 4,700 participants in only four years.
Prior to the contest, the University also sponsored Women’s Health Awareness Day. On the concourse of the Bob Carpenter Center, several booths were open to promote women’s health, including a free cholesterol test, as well as interactive and educational exhibits from the University Department of Behavioral Health and Nutrition, the HERA Foundation, Susan G Komen for the cure, Lupus Foundation of America, National Eating Disorders Awareness Council at UD, Colleges Vs. Cancer and the Christina Care Health Systems.
The UDairy Creamery also donated a $500 of its proceeds from sales of its featured flavor, Pink Ribbon Strawberry, to the HERA Women’s Cancer Foundation. HERA, which stands for Health, Empowerment Research and Awareness, is a nationally recognized non-profit ovarian cancer organization.
