RICHMOND, Va. – University of Delaware junior Elena Delle Donne earned Colonial Athletic Association and College Sports Madness CAA Women’s Basketball Player of the Week honors on Monday after helping the now No. 12 ranked Blue Hens to a 2-0 week in conference action.
Delle Donne, the CAA Preseason Player of the Year and an Associated Press Preseason All-American, erupted for a season-high and Bob Carpenter Center record 41 points as the Hens downed Hofstra 84-66 on Jan. 26. The 6-5 junior, who hit on 14 of a career-high tying 29 shots from the field, also added a game-high 15 rebounds and dished out five assists as she posted her sixth double-double of the season.
The nation’s leading scorer at 28.4 points per game, Delle Donne surpassed her previous season-high and previous BCC record of 40 points scored vs. Penn State on Nov. 17 and her 40 points vs. George Mason on the road on Jan. 8 as she notched the fifth 40-point game of her career.
The Blue Hens (18-1, 9-0 CAA) closed out the week with their eighth consecutive win in a 72-65 triumph over two-time defending CAA champion James Madison on Sunday in Harrisonburg, Va. Delle Donne poured in a game-high 23 points to go with nine boards, four blocks, and three assists to help boost the Hens to victory.
Delle Donne collected CAA Player of the Week accolades for the sixth time this season and the 14th time in her three-year career and earned the CSM award for the fourth time this season and for the second straight week.
The Wilmington, Del. native was also named to the Preseason Wade National Player of the Year Trophy Watch List, Preseason John Wooden Top 30 List, Naismith Early-Season National Player of the Year Watch List, and John R. Wooden Award Midseason Watch List earlier this season.
Delle Donne and the Blue Hens return to action Thursday as they wrap up a two-game road stretch in a rematch with CAA foe UNCW (13-7, 6-3 CAA) in a 7 p.m. tipoff. The Hens knocked off the Seahawks 69-37 at home back on Jan. 12 at the Bob Carpenter Center.
