UPPER MARLBORO, Md. -- The 2012 Virginia 529 Colonial Athletic Association Women's Basketball Championship, taking place at The Show Place Arena this weekend, is officially underway.
The University of Delaware, the CAA regular season champion and the top seed for the tournament, will begin its quest for its first CAA Tournament title Friday when the No. 7 nationally-ranked Blue Hens (27-1) take on familiar foe Old Dominion at 12 noon in the first of four quarterfinal games.
The Blue Hens, the first CAA team since Old Dominion in 2001-02 to go through the league schedule undefeated at 18-0, will enter the matchup riding a 17-game win streak. Delaware posted a 76-63 win over the Monarchs back on Feb. 9 at the Bob Carpenter Center in the only regular season meeting between the two teams. The Hens knocked Old Dominion out of the tournament last season with a 72-55 victory in the quarterfinals on the way to a berth in the league title game.
Old Dominion (12-20), the No. 8 seed and the 17-time champions of this tournament, advanced to face Delaware thanks to a 72-56 first round win over No. 9 seed Towson Thursday afternoon.
The Blue Hens, who have already established school records for consecutive wins and wins in a season, are led by CAA Coach of the Year and national Coach of the Year candidate Tina Martin, 2012 CAA Player of the Year Elena Delle Donne, and third team All-CAA guard Lauren Carra. Delle Donne, a national Player of the Year candidate, is the nation's leading scorer, averaging 28.3 points per game.
