Delaware Announces 2011 Women’s Cross Country Schedule; Blue Hens to Host Two Home Meets

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware will compete in eight regular season meets during the 2011 season, including two home competitions at White Clay Creek State Park this coming fall.

Blue Hen head coach Jim Fischer announced the complete schedule Wednesday afternoon. Fischer will begin his 30th season as a head coach at Delaware this fall, including his fourth as head coach of the women harriers. The UD men’s cross country team will compete as a club sport for the first time this fall after previously competing on the varsity level.

The Blue Hens will host two meets during the upcoming season, including the Delaware Invitational on Sept. 17 and the Blue & Gold Invitational on Oct. 15. Both events will be held at the Hens’ long-time home, White Clay Creek State Park in Newark, and will including both men’s and women’s competition.

Delaware, which returns 11 letterwinners from last year’s squad that placed seventh at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships and also added a team title at the Blue & Gold Invitational in October.

The Hens will be led by junior Katy Loughran, who posted a 34th place finish at the CAA meet a year ago and posted top four finishes at both the Delaware Invitational and the Blue & Gold Invitational, and by junior Katie Deinert, who was 40th at the CAA championships last October.

The Hens will compete four times in the month of September, opening the season Sept. 3 at the Lid Lifter Invitational at Maryland-Eastern Shore followed by the Fordham Invitational on Sept. 10, the Delaware Invitational on Sept. 17, and the Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh on Sept. 30.

After a taking a week off, the Hens will return to action by hosting the Blue & Gold Invitational on Oct. 15. Following another break, the Hens will travel south to compete at the CAA Championships at Georgia State University near Atlanta on Oct. 29.

The NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region Championships will be held on Nov. 12 at Maryland-Eastern Shore in Princess Anne, Md. followed by the ECAC Championships on Nov. 19 at Van Cortlandt State Park in the Bronx, N.Y. The NCAA Championships will be held Nov. 21 at Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Ind.

Starting times for all the competitions will be announced on the UD athletics website (www.bluehens.com)closer to the date of each meet.
