HAVERFORD, Pa. -- Sophomore Vicky Caruso (at right) picked up where she left off from an outstanding freshman season as she won the 300 meters and placed second in the 55 meters to lead the University of Delaware women’s indoor track and field team at the season-opening Jack Pyrah Invitational hosted by Villanova Friday at Haverford College’s Alumni Field House.
Caruso, who set five school freshman records as a rookie during the 2009-10 indoor season, was the Blue Hens’ lone champion on the night as she won the 300 meters in a time of 39.88. She also placed second in the 55 meters with a time of 7.33.
Delaware collected 10 top three finishes during the one-day meet and also had 32 Top 10 finishes in a solid opening performance.
A pair of freshmen also posted runner-up finishes as Alana Pantale was second in the shot put (39-7) and Paige Morris was the runner-up in the long jump (17-6 3/4). The Hens also got runner-up showings from Briana Gray and Alexa Windsor in the high jump (5-0 1/2) and one from the 4 x 400 meter relay team (3:52.99).
Third place finishes were turned in by Rachel Wasserman in the 800 meters (2:28.08), Kristi Cox in the 500 meters (1:17.35), and Asia Hollis in the 55 meters (7.33). The Hens also posted three fourth place finishes from freshmen Aretah Ettarh in the shot put (35-7 3/4), Courtney Sniscak in the weight throw (38-1 1/4), and Margaret Lestrange in the high jump (4-11 1/2).
Delaware will return to action Jan. 7 when the Blue Hens will host the Delaware Invitational at the Delaware Field House.
