Caruso, Prettyman Post Two First Place Finishes as University of Delaware Women Place Second at Own Thomson Invitational

NEWARK, Del. -- Sophomore Vicky Caruso and freshman Lindsay Prettyman each won an event and teamed to capture a relay title to lead the University of Delaware women’s indoor track & field team to a second place team finish at the Blue Hens’ own Thomson Invitational at the Delaware Field House Saturday.

Caruso raised her career meet title count to 16 as she won the 400 meter dash in 56.46 and then teamed with Asia Hollis, Nijah Dupiche, and Kristi Cox to capture the 4 x 400 meter relay in 3:55.19. Prettyman captured the mile run with a clocking of 5:15.01 and then teamed with Emily Gispert, Karen Mandrachia, and Rachel Wasserman to capture the 4 x 800 meter relay in 9:52.98.

As a team, the Delaware women finished second in the Division I team standing with 176 points. Towson won the team title followed by Delaware, St. Francis (Pa.), Saint Joseph’s, Coppin State, Rider, Delaware State, and Villanova. East Stroudsburg won the women’s Division II-III team title, St. Francis (Pa.) won the men’s Division I team crown, and East Stroudsburg was the champion in the Division II-III section.

Delaware also got two first place finishes from a pair of freshmen in the field events as Courtney Markow (at right) won the pole vault with a leap of 10-10 and Paige Morris was the winner in the long jump (17-5 1/4).

The Blue Hens also posted five second place finishes as Cox was the runner-up in the 200 meters (26.06) and 400 meters (58.47), Carly Simmons was second in the 500 meters (1:21.97), Mandrachia was second in the 1,000 meters (3:10.99), and Alana Pantale was the runner-up in the shot put (42-4/14).

Delaware had 25 top five finishes overall as Hollis was also third in the 400 meters (59.46), fifth in the 200 meters (26.58), and sixth in the 60 meters (8.09), Dupiche was third in the 800 meters (2:25.82), Gispert was fourth in the 500 meters (1:22.53), Jen Watunya was fourth in the 3,000 meters (10:46.79) and fifth in the mile (5:26.86), Wasserman was fifth in the 500 meters (1:22.69), and Pantala placed fifth in the weight throw (41-8 3/4).

Delaware will return to action Feb. 4-5 at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational at the New York City Armory.
