TOWSON, Md. – The University of Delaware women’s lacrosse team collected a handful of honors Thursday night as freshman Caitlin McCartney was tabbed the 2012 Rookie of the Year at the annual Colonial Athletic Association Women’s Lacrosse Awards Banquet.
McCartney (at right), who also was named to the All-CAA first team, was among four Blue Hens honored during the banquet. Junior Angela Biciocchi also earned All-CAA first team honors while sophomore Shannon Burns earned a spot on the All-CAA second team and freshman attack Allison Hahn was an All-Rookie pick.
Towson will serve as host of the four-team CAA Championships this weekend at Johnny Unitas Stadium. Top seed Towson will take on fourth-seed Drexel in the first semifinal game Friday at noon with No. 2 seed James Madison taking on No. 3 seed Hofstra at 2:30. The title game will be played Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
McCartney becomes the seventh player in UD history to earn conference Rookie of the Year honors and the first since Nicole Flego was honored in 2007.
McCartney turned in one of the best performances by a freshman in Delaware women’s lacrosse history this spring, ranking second in the league with 35 goals and eighth in the conference in points per game (2.60). Her admirable 35-goal season marked the most for a Blue Hen freshman since Flego netted 36 goals during the 2007 season.
The three-time CAA Rookie of the Week turned in six hat tricks this season and led the Blue Hens with 37 ground balls. McCartney ranks 25th in the NCAA averaging 2.62 ground balls per game for Delaware, which ranks 50th in the NCAA, scooping up 15.2 ground balls per game.
Joining McCartney on the All-CAA first team was Biciocchi (at left), who capped a solid junior campaign as a top match-up defender for the Blue Hen squad. Biciocchi ranked second for the Hens, forcing 16 turnovers, and was third in both draw controls (24) and ground balls (30).
Burns, a midfielder, was selected as a member of the All-CAA second team after a standout sophomore season. Burns finished out the regular season leading the CAA in conference-only games with 4.14 draw controls per game and 1.71 caused turnovers per game. She also ranks 36th in the NCAA with 1.71 caused turnovers per game.
Burns set a school and conference record for most draw controls recorded in a single game, collecting nine against Hofstra earlier this month. She surpassed the previous record of seven draw controls set by Julianna Jeffers on April 25, 2010 vs. Drexel. The Springfield, Pa. native closed out the season by winning 47, just two shy of tying the all-time Delaware single season record of 49 set by Ashley Moderacki in 2001.
Earning a spot on the CAA All-Rookie team along with McCartney was freshman attacker Allison Hahn. Hahn, who hails from Vienna, Va., surged in CAA play this season, ranking 10th in conference-only games by averaging 2.57 points per game and sixth by recording 1.14 assists per outing. The freshman scored the game-winning goal three times this season against Lehigh, William & Mary, and Old Dominion. She ranked second in the league in that category.
Delaware recently finished its second season under head coach Kateri Linville and posted an overall record of 5-12 while just missing a spot in the CAA Tournament with a 3-4 league mark.
