University of Delaware Assistant Coach Kristen Carr Named to U.S. Women's National Senior Team Roster Canadian Tour
February 6, 2012
BALTIMORE, Md. -- University of Delaware women's lacrosse assistant coach Kristen Carr was named to the 24-member U.S. women's national senior team roster for the North American Challenge Cup.
The Challenge Cup will be held July 13-15, 2012, in Oshawa, Canada, host of the 2013 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Cup. The team was selected from the 38-player 2011-12 U.S. women's senior team that most recently competed at Champion Challenge, a US Lacrosse event, in January.
After the North American Challenge Cup, the touring team will return to the U.S. and, in less than two weeks, be ready to try out for the 2012-13 U.S. women's national senior team July 27-29. The first round of open tryouts, from which current U.S. women's senior team players are exempt, will be held May 25-27 at the US Lacrosse National Tournament (formerly Women's Division National Tournament) in Stony Brook, N.Y.
Following the second round of tryouts, a team of 36 players will be selected. En route to the 2013 World Cup, this group will gather for several training weekends and competitions in September, October (at US Lacrosse's Stars & Stripes event), November, and January 2013 (Champion Challenge). Immediately following Champion Challenge, the final 18-player FIL World Cup team plus alternate(s) will be selected.
A 2010 graduate of North Carolina with a degree in exercise and sport science, Carr was named to the Blue Hens women’s lacrosse coaching staff after serving as a volunteer assistant with the Tar Heels last season for head coach Jenny Levy. She helped lead UNC to a 15-6 record, a runner-up finish in the Atlantic Coast Conference, and a berth in the NCAA Final Four before falling to Northwestern 11-10 in the semifinals.
As a four-year standout as a defensive midfielder, Carr led the Tar Heels to a four-year record of 60-20 and four NCAA Tournament appearances, including a national runner-up finish in 2009, a berth in the semifinals in 2010, and trips to the quarterfinals in 2007 and 2008. She appeared in 81 games with 62 starts and recorded 21 goals and nine assists while setting a UNC career record with 174 draw controls. She also set UNC single game (eight) and single season (64) marks for draw controls.
She earned first team All-American and first team All-ACC honors as a senior in 2010 when she was one of the nation’s top draw control specialists and led the nation’s third-ranked defense that allowed just 7.25 goals per game. She broke her own UNC single season draw control record with 64 and also caused 18 turnovers to rank No. 3 all-time in UNC history. The team went 17-3 and advanced to the NCAA semifinals.
Among the 24-player roster are 12 returnees from the gold medal-winning 2009 FIL World Cup team and six players who are currently in college. Carr is joined on the roster by four other former Tar heels, including Amber Falcone ('09), Erica LaGrow ('08), Jenn Russell ('10) and Laura Zimmerman ('12).
