NEWARK, Del. -- University of Delaware second-year head women’s lacrosse coach Kateri Linville announced that senior Grace Wills has been selected as team captain for the 2012 season.
"The Delaware lacrosse team has set its goals high for the 2012 season and has selected Grace Wills as its captain," said Linville, the second-year head coach who served as team captain for the Blue Hens during her playing days at Delaware. "Grace is an authentic leader who cares about the success of the program. She has earned the trust and respect of the team and the coaching staff, which will help her to pave the legacy she envisions for the Delaware lacrosse program."
Wills, a three-year letter winner who hails from Baltimore, Md., saw time in each of Delaware’s 17 games last season, including eight starts. A defensive power for the Hens, she forced seven turnovers and ranked fifth on the team with 15 groundballs, including a season-high four groundballs during the Hens’ victory over Hofstra.
A leader both on and off the field, Wills reigns as the 2011 Delaware women’s lacrosse Team Sportsmanship Award recipient in addition to earning a spot on the Colonial Athletic Association’s Academic Honor Roll.
“Grace is a workhorse with an outstanding lacrosse IQ,” said Linville. “She will be a vocal leader and glue player in our defensive unit. I am confident that Grace will put in the work needed to take her game to the next level and that the team will follow her lead on and off the field.”
Delaware (0-1) will continue action next Wednesday, Feb. 22, when the Blue Hens host Villanova at 4 p.m. in the home opener at Delaware Stadium.
