Athlete photoNEWARK, Del. -- For the first time in her early Blue Hen career, freshman Caitlin McCartney (at right) has earned weekly accolades from the Colonial Athletic Association as she was tabbed the league’s Rookie of the Week Monday.

McCartney is the first Blue Hen to be garner weekly honors from the league this season after helping Delaware (2-1) to a 2-0 week in non-conference action that saw the Hens pick up 11-7 home victories over both Villanova and Lehigh at Delaware Stadium.

The Blue Hen freshman, a native of Doylestown, Pa. (Archbishop Wood High School), tallied six goals on the week, including her second career hat trick with four goals against Villanova, followed by another two scores vs. Lehigh.

She became the first Delaware player since Lisa Blanc in 1980 to score three or more goals in each of her first two career games and with the two-goal effort vs. Lehigh, fell just one goal short of becoming the only player in UD history to accomplish the feat.

"Caitlin is a great athlete and a humble person," said UD second year head coach Kateri Linville. "I am happy to see her receive the recognition she deserves for her efforts and execution."

McCartney started in both contests and totaled nine shots during the pair of games, taking six against Villanova and three vs. Lehigh, putting all but one attempt on goal.

In an all-around impressive effort, McCartney also won six draw controls, scooped up four groundballs, dished out an assist, and forced one turnover on the week.

Up next, McCartney and the Blue Hens hit the road to face No. 15 ranked Georgetown for the Hoyas' season-opener on Wednesday, Feb. 29, at 4 p.m.
