Delaware Women’s Lacrosse Assistant Coach Kristen Carr Named to U.S. Women’s National Senior Team Roster for Champion Challenge
January 27, 2012

BALTIMORE, Md. -- University of Delaware women’s lacrosse assistant coach Kristen Carr has been named to the U.S. women's national senior team roster for the Champion Challenge taking place Jan. 27-29 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Florida.
Carr, a 2010 North Carolina graduate and a first-year member of the UD staff, was one of 38 athletes named to the women's roster.
The festivities, which are being put on by US Lacrosse for the seventh consecutive year, see the women's national senior team take on the English women's national team on Jan. 27. The squad then turns its attention to the top-two finishing collegiate women's lacrosse teams from the 2011 NCAA Championship, as they play Maryland (Jan. 28) before taking on Northwestern (Jan. 29) on the final day of competition.
Carr, a four-year standout at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a volunteer assistant coach with the Tar Heels this past spring, was named an assistant coach for the University of Delaware women’s lacrosse program in August, 2011. A 2010 graduate of North Carolina with a degree in exercise and sport science, Carr served as a volunteer assistant with the Tar Heels last season for head coach Jenny Levy. She helped lead UNC to a 15-6 record, a runner-up finish in the Atlantic Coast Conference, and a berth in the NCAA Final Four before falling to Northwestern 11-10 in the semifinals.
As a four-year standout as a defensive midfielder, Carr led the Tar Heels to a four-year record of 60-20 and four NCAA Tournament appearances, including a national runner-up finish in 2009, a berth in the semifinals in 2010, and trips to the quarterfinals in 2007 and 2008. She appeared in 81 games with 62 starts and recorded 21 goals and nine assists while setting a UNC career record with 174 draw controls. She also set UNC single game (eight) and single season (64) marks for draw controls.
Carr earned first team All-American and first team All-ACC honors as a senior in 2010 when she was one of the nation’s top draw control specialists and led the nation’s third-ranked defense that allowed just 7.25 goals per game. She broke her own UNC single season draw control record with 64 and also caused 18 turnovers to rank No. 3 all-time in UNC history. The team went 17-3 and advanced to the NCAA semifinals.
This event will serve as the foundation for the 38-player roster, led by Georgetown women's lacrosse head coach Ricky Fried, before the roster is slimmed to 24 in preparation for a summer competition tour in Oshawa, Canada, host of the 2013 World Cup. Carr is joined by six additional Tar Heels on the roster, including Amber Falcone, Jenn Russell, Kara Cannizzaro, Corey Donohoe, Erica LaGrow, and Laura Zimmerman.
Additionally, the event will feature National Team Player Clinics for youth players in grades 3-12 (Jan. 28) hosted by both the men's and women's national teams. The women's team coaching staff also will offer a clinic for local coaches to learn "The Team USA Way."
