Three Hens Highlight CAA Women’s Lacrosse Preseason Team; Delaware Picked to Finish Fourth Overall

Athlete photoRICHMOND, Va. – Angela Biciocchi, Shannon Burns and Caitlin McCartney all represent the University of Delaware and the Blue Hen women’s lacrosse team was selected to finish fourth overall in the conference as the 2013 preseason standings and first team selections were announced Thursday afternoon by the league.

McCartney (at right), the 2012 CAA Rookie of the Year and First Team All-CAA honoree, returns for her sophomore campaign after leading the Hens with 35 goals and 37 groundballs while making an immediate impact on the Delaware squad.  The midfielder finished in the top 10 in four statistical categories in the CAA during her freshman season.  Her 2.4Athlete photo7 groundballs per game were also good for 30th in the NCAA.  Additionally, McCartney, a native of Doylestown, Pa., netted six total hat tricks last season.

Biciocchi (at left), Delaware’s lone senior on the 2013 roster, wrapped up her junior season as a First Team All-CAA selectionin addition to earning a spot on the IWLCA All-Mid-Atlantic Region Second Team.  The defender started all 17 games for the Blue Hens in 2012 and finished the year with 30 groundballs and 24 draw controls.  Biciocchi, a Potomac, Md. Native, also caused 16 turnovers last season.

Burns (bottom right), the team’s final first team preseason honoree, was an All-CAA Second Team selection during her sophomore season.  As a midfielder, she marked her spot in the history books last season after rAthlete photoecording a school-record nine draw controls against Drexel on April 13.  Additionally, Burns finished second in school history with 47 draw controls during the 2012 slate.  The Springfield, Pa. native also placed seventh all-time with 24 caused turnovers last year.

Sophomore goalie Alex Zaugra was named to the Preseason Honorable Mention team.

Towson, the defending champion, was predicted to finish atop the CAA standings with a total of 49points while James Madison was picked second with 41 points.  Drexel received one first place vote and 35 total points to earn the third spot.

The Blue Hens were predicted to finish fourth with 28 points followed by Hofstra, William & Mary, Old Dominion and George Mason.

Delaware looks to improve from its 5-12 (3-4 CAA) record from last season and welcome 11 freshmen to the 2013 squad. 

Also returning for the Blue Hens is junior attacker Chelsea Fay, who also netted 35 goals for UD while tallying a team-leading 41 points.  She made her presence felt around the net last season with a CAA-best 101 shots on goal (5.94pg).

The league’s head coaches voted on the preseason rankings and All-CAA women’s lacrosse team.

Delaware women’s lacrosse opens the 2013 slate with preseason exhibition contests against No. 4 NorthCarolina and No. 6 Duke.  The Blue Hens kick off the regular season Saturday, Feb. 16 as they host No. 13 Georgetown at noon at Delaware Stadium.
