Delaware’s Weaver Wins Heat of 5,000 Meters; Watunya Second in 5,000m Heat at First Day of Princeton Track Invitational

PRINCETON, N.J. -- The two-day, 35-team Larry Ellis Invitational hosted by Princeton University got underway on Friday afternoon with University of Delaware runners competing in five events.

The second day of competition will get underway Saturday morning at Princeton’s Weaver Stadium.

Delaware junior Andy Weaver led the way for the Blue Hens men on Friday as he won his heat in the 5,000 meters as he crossed the finish line with a time of 14:22.69, the second fastest time in school history and the best showing by a Blue Hen in 30 years. Matt Kelsh set the UD record of 14:21.8 back in 1981.

Also for the Delaware men, James Townsend was sixth in his heat of the 1,500 meters (3:57.72), Mike Tait was ninth in his heat of the 800 meters (1:56.25), and Dan Feeney was 13th in his section of the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a career-best time of 9:26.01.

Matt Duffy of Brown won the heat of the 1,500 meters (3:54.95), Patrick Peterson of Sacred Heart won the section of the 800 meters (1:53.85), and Massachusetts’ Sean Duncan won the heat of the 3,000 meter steeplechase in 9:04.0.

On the women’s side, Delaware’s Jen Watunya (at right) was the lone Blue Hen competitor. She finished second in her section of the 5,000 meters with a career-best time of 17:39.29, good for seventh all-time at UD. New Hampshire’s Elise Beattie won the heat with time of 17:34.85.

Members of both Delaware squads will also compete at the Morgan State University Invitational in Baltimore on Saturday.
