Delaware Athletes Post Three Top 10 Finishes During Second Day of Penn Relays; Women Place Sixth in Shuttle Hurdle Relay

PHILADELPHIA -- The University of Delaware capped a busy day by competing in nine events during the second day of the Penn Relays Friday at the University of Pennsylvania’s Franklin Field.

The Blue Hens registered three top 10 finishes during the afternoon as John Viotto placed fourth in the men’s Eastern shot put competition with a toss of 53-feet, 7 1/2-inches, the men’s 4 x 400 meter relay team of Vinny Fronczkowski, Steve Forgo, Tyreece Clayton, and Justin Molligan finished fifth in the Wetzler/Pennsylvania 1,600 meter relay with a time of 3:24.13, and the UD women posted a sixth place showing in the shuttle hurdles relay as the foursome of Latoya James (at right), Kayla Hennessy, Leah Putman, and Brittany Fox ran to a time of 1:00.25.

Fronczkowski competed in four different events during a busy day at one of the nation’s prestigioius track and field events.

Viotto also finished 12th in the discus (157-11), the men’s distance medley relay team of James Townsend, Fronczkowski, Mike Tait, and Joe Grieco placed 18th (10:38.20), Tim Byrne posted a 19th place showing in the shot put (49-3 1/2), and the women’s 4 x 200 meter relay of Vicky Caruso, Nijah Dupiche, Asia Hollis, and Kristo Cox placed 26th (1:40.26).

Also for Delaware, the men’s 4 x 200 meter relay team of Tim Kutchen, Clayton, Fronczkowski, and Ross Shober finished 29th (1:28.66/4th in heat), and the men’s 4 x 100 meter relay team of Kutchen, Clayton, Fronczkowski, and Shober posted a 59th place showing (43.34/7th in heat).

Both the Delaware men’s and women’s 4 x 200 meter relay teams posted the fourth best time in school history.

Delaware will close out competition at the Penn Relays Saturday with Jim Schwendtner, Connor Whitesel, and Ryan Braunagel taking part in the men’s hammer throws and the Lindsay Prettyman, Emily Gispert, Jessica Olsen, and Rachel Wasserman teaming to run in the 4 x 800 meter relay.

On the men’s side, TCU won the men’s 4 x 100 meter relay in 39.51; Rashad Williams of Central Connecticut State won the shot put (56-2 1/4); Auburn won the 4 x 200 meter relay in 1:21.81; Cody Riffle of Michigan won the discus (178-10), LSU won the 4 x 200 meter relay (1:21.81), Brown won the distance medley relay (9:51.78), and East Stroudsburg captured the Wetzler 4 x 400 meter relay (3:17.68).

On the women’s side, Auburn won the 4 x 200 meter relay (1:31.84) while Eastern Kentucky captured the shuttle hurdle relay (56.57).
