Caruso Places Second in 400m; Delaware Men Set Record in 4 x 1,500 Relay at Raleigh Relays Outdoor Track Meet

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The University of Delaware men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams opened the Raleigh Relays at North Carolina State with several outstanding performances Friday night.

The Delaware women posted four top 11 finishes while the Blue Hen men had four top 10 showings. The second and final day of the meet will begin on Saturday morning.

Delaware sophomore Vicky Caruso (at right) was the most successful finisher on the day for the Blue Hens as she placed second overall in the 400 meters with a career-best time of 54.64, the second best mark in school history and just .01 off the school record. She won her heat by a full second.

The top finisher among the Blue Hen men was the 6,000 meter relay squad of Joe Grieco, James Townsend, Corey Wall, and Andy Weaver that placed third overall and set a new school record in the event with a time of 15:50.79. The tandem broke the previous school record 15:58.3 set by Troy Bockius, Pat Boettcher, Robb Munro, and Mike DiGennaro in 2000.

Also for the Delaware women, the 6,000 meter relay team of Lindsay Prettyman, Emily Gispert, Jessica Olsen, and Jen Watunya finished seventh in 19:41.37, Alana Pantale was 10th in the discus (136-2) and 11th in the shot put (41-7 1/4), the 1,600 meter sprint relay team of Caruso, Asia Hollis, Kristi Cox, and Nijah Dupiche finished 13th (4:08.00), Hollis was 35th in the 400 meters (58.63), Kayla Hennessy was 35th in the 400 meter hurdles (1:05.57) and 62nd in the 100 meters (13.08), and Carly Simmons was 48th ni the 400 meter hurdles (1:07.32). Pantale’s throws were both season bests.

Also for the Delaware men, John Viotto was fifth in the shot put (53-8 1/4), a career-best and the second longest throw in UD history, and eighth in the discus (153-8), Tim Byrne was eighth in the shot put (50-8 3/4) and 20th in the discus (138-7), the 1,600 meter sprint relay team of Tyreece Clayton, Steve Forgo, Vinny Fronczkowski, and Mike Tait was 10th (3:33.20), Steve Vincent was 14th in the 5,000 meters (14:41.52), Jim Schwendtner finished 20th in the shot put (43-2 1/2) and 27th in the discus (132-9), Ryan Beach was 22nd in the discus (137-1), Ross Shober was 47th in the 100 meters (11.32), Vinny Fronczkowski placed 53rd in the 400 meters (51.02), Tim Kutchen was 62nd in the 100 meters (11.56), Tyreece Clayton finished 69th in the 100 meters (11.65), and Justin Molligan posted a 77th place finish in the 400 meters (51.95), and Stephen Forgo was 79th in the 400 meters (52.21).

Members of the Delaware squads will also compete at the Towson Invitational on Saturday.
