Delaware Track & Field Opens 2013 Season at Coastal Carolina; 4 x 200m Relay Places Third

CONWAY, S.C. -- The University of Delaware women’s outdoor track & field team opened the 2013 season Friday at the Shamrock Invitational hosted by Coastal Carolina University and got big efforts from hurdler Latoya James and the by the 4 x 200 meter relay team.
James, who finished as the Colonial Athletic Association and ECAC runner-up in the 100 meter hurdles a year ago, picked up where she left off as she ran to a time of 14.13 to post the fourth best preliminary time and qualify for Saturday’s finals.
Also highlighting the day for the Blue Hens was the 4 x 200 meter relay team of Vicky Caruso (at right), Toresha Foster, Chelsi Campbell, and Nijah Dupiche who placed third overall with a time of 1:38.50. Coastal Carolina was the overall winner of the race with a time of 1:36.37.
In addition to James, Delaware’s Michelle White also competed in the 100 meter hurdles and finished 57th overall with a time of 16.56.
The Blue Hens also had three student-athletes compete in the 100 meter preliminaries as James finished 37th (12.71), Amira Idris finished 52nd (12.87), Paige Morris was 69th with a time of 13.13, and Michelle Simmons placed 90th with a clocking of 13.32.
Delaware will finish up the two-day meet Saturday beginning at 10 a.m.
Blue Hens will compete in the 200 meters, 400 meters, 800 meters, 5,000 meters, 400 meter hurdles, 4 x 100 meter relay, 4 x 400 meter relay, long jump, triple jump,and the javelin.
In addition to competing at Coastal Carolina, some members of the UD squad will also compete at the Virginia Commonwealth Invitational Saturday in Richmond, Va.
