RICHMOND, Va. – University of Delaware women’s soccer goalkeeper Breanna Stemler (at right) has been named Co-Player of the Week, the Colonial Athletic Association announced Monday afternoon. This is the first time Stemler has earned the honor in her career.
She is the second Delaware player to earn weekly honors this season, joining Shannon Kearney, who was tabbed Co-Rookie of the Week on Sept. 6. Stemler was also named the National 5 & 10 Best of the Blue Hens Player of the Week.
The Horsham, Pa. native recorded two shutouts last week as Delaware defeated George Mason University and Towson University, winning each game 1-0. In those two games, she made 10 saves, including seven versus George Mason.
She now has four shutouts this season, bringing her career total to seven, tying her for sixth all-time at Delaware. With 110 career saves, she is in sole possession of eighth in record books. Stemler needs just two stops in Delaware’s final game to reach the record books for saves in a season. The 11th place mark is 66, held by Lindsay Shover, set in 2002.
The wins ended a six-game winless drought for the Hens, which improved to 7-10-1 overall and 3-6-1 in the league. It was the first time Delaware has won back-to-back home CAA games since the 2008 season.
Delaware concludes its season on Saturday night when the Blue Hens make the 45-mile trip to Drexel University. The game is slated to begin at 7 p.m. at Vidas Field.
