Delaware Women’s Soccer Travels to Hofstra for Colonial Athletic Association First-Place Battle Thursday

NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware women’s soccer team makes the 158-mile trip north to Hempstead, N.Y. and battle Hofstra University in a Colonial Athletic Association, first-place showdown Thursday, October 4 at 6 p.m. at Hofstra’s Soccer Stadium.
Riding a four-game winning streak, Delaware (7-4, 4-0) shares the top spot in the CAA with Hofstra (7-4, 3-0), who is also owns a winning streak of four games.
“Hofstra is a very good team, strong at every position and they have had a lot of success this season,” Delaware head coach Scott Grzenda commented on UD’s opponent. “Traveling to the Island is always difficult, however we are very excited to face Hofstra tomorrow night.”
Delaware looks to continue its winning ways after posting a 7-2 record during the month of September. Senior forward Ali Miller has the team lead with five goals on the season while senior forward Melissa Pennington has three assist, tops on the Blue Hens squad. Junior goalkeeper Jess Levy has registered four shutouts this season and has a 0.74 GAA in 10 games played.
The Blue Hens and Pride have played 20 times with UD owning a 6-14 record that includes two victories last season.
Led by sixth-year head coach, Simon Riddiough, the Pride return 16 letterwinners and five starters from a squad that went 10-8 last season. Freshman midfielder Jill Mullholland leads the Pride with six goals and 14 points. The trio of sophomore forward Lulu Echeverry, freshman forward Leah Galton, and sophomore forward Sam Scolarici also have five goals apiece. Junior forward Ruby Staplehurst paces the team with four assists this season.
“The team worked hard yesterday in preparation and I know the girls are eager to get back on the field after our trip down south,” Grezenda said.
The Blue Hens will return home and play on Sunday, October 7 at 1 p.m. against Northeastern University at Delaware Mini Stadium.
