PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – A late second-half goal by Drexel University sealed a 1-0 defeat for the University of Delaware women’s soccer team in the Colonial Athletic Association regular-season finale Wednesday night at DU’s Vidas Field.
Delaware completed the 2012 season with a 9-8 record and 6-4 mark in the conference while Drexel (12-4-2, 6-3-1 CAA) secured the No. 2 seed in the CAA Tournament.
With the loss, the Blue Hens became the No. 6 seed of the upcoming CAA Tournament and will travel to Wilmington, N.C. and play UNCW on Sunday, October 28.
“It was a very exciting and competitive game,” Delaware head coach Scott Grzenda. “We had our chances throughout, but give Drexel credit for sticking one in the net.”
In the 88th minute of the match, a corner kick by Drexel’s Courtney Wylie with a helpful assist by Alyssa Findlay helped Sam Greenfield knock the ball into the back of Delaware’s net for the game’s only goal.
The Blue Hens out shot the Dragons, 7-3, in the second half of the match. Senior Ali Miller (at right) was the only Delaware player to collect two shots on goal. Drexel’s Megan Hammaker tallied two of the Dragons four shots on goal.
Drexels Biz Matta and Delaware’s Chelsea Duffy each received yellow cards from officials during the match.
William & Mary won the CAA regular season and will host the semi-finals and finals of the CAA Tournament. If the Blue Hens defeat UNCW on Sunday, UD will travel to Williamsburg, Va. for a semi-final match on Friday, November 2 at W&M’s Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Day Field.Back To Women's Soccer Home Women's Soccer Story Archive
