Women Sweep Two Events, Win Big Over La Salle and Rider

NEWARK, Del. - - The University of Delaware men’s and women’s swim programs finished up its home slate for the 2010 calendar year with a convincing sweep over La Salle and Rider, in Rawstrom Natatorium on Saturday afternoon.

The men (6-1, 3-1 CAA) set another pool record in the 200-yard medley relay, as they won the event in 1:33.42, besting the time they set earlier in the year against George Mason by .48 seconds.

Ryan Roberts led the way posting four first place finishes. He won the 200 and the 500-yard freestyle races as well as the 200-yard backstroke. Additionally, he was the opening leg of the 400-yard freestyle relay team that took first place in 3:06.72.

Zach Schiavo finished in first place in three events, winning the 100-yard freestyle event in 1:42.24. He was also the anchor in the record setting 200-yard medley relay team as well as the third leg of the 400-yard freestyle relay team. Adding to his medal count, he placed second in the 50-yard freestyle event, rounding out his afternoon.

The 200-yard medley relay team consisted of Robert MacLeish, Ross Buckwalter, Cole Clark and Schiavo while the 400-yard relay team consisted of Roberts, Paul Gallagher, Schiavo and MacLeish. The other individual first place winner was Buckwalter, who won the 100-yard backstroke in 58.07.

The women (6-2, 3-2 CAA) swept two events, winning all three podium spots in the 100-yard butterfly event and the 200-yard individual medley race.

Torie Gillespie won the 100-yard butterfly in 57.91, followed by teammate Kaitlin Wolla in 58.03. Elise Kanegawa finished the tri-fecta with a third place finish in 58.23.

The women were at it again as they placed all three podium winners in the 200-yard individual medley in the next women’s swimming event. Hannah Facchine started things off with a win in 2:10.66. Nicole Osman came in second in 2:11.97 while Mackenzie Howarth rounded out the event in 2:13.38.

Facchine ended the day with four first place finishes, also winning the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke events. She was also the second leg of the 200-yard medley relay team that touched home before any other team in 1:46.96.

Other first place winners for the women were Cortney Barry (above right) (1000-yard freestyle), Courtney Raw (100-yard backstroke), Wolla (200-yard butterfly), Erinne Butler (50-yard freestyle), Tori Gillespie (100-yard butterfly), and the 400-yard freestyle relay team.

Both squads return to the pool next weekend, as they travel to Rutgers to take part in the Frank Elm Invitational.
