Women Swimmers Lower Season Times in Eight Events, Place Fourth at Frank Elm Invitational

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - - Competing against 15 other swim programs, the University of Delaware men’s and women’s swim teams each earned a top five team finish, as the men claimed second, and the women placed fourth at the Frank Elm Invitational hosted by Rutgers. The Invitational started on Friday and ended with a night session on Sunday.
The men were led by their relay teams, earning two second place finishes and three third place finishes on their way to earning 1668 points, only 41.5 points behind La Salle for the team title. The Blue Hens claimed a second place finish in the 200 and 400-yard freestyle relays as well as third place finishes in the 800-yard freestyle relay and both the 200 and 400-yard medley relay races.
The 200-yard freestyle team of Paul Gallagher, Robert MacLeish, Zach Schiavo and Nick Woomer finished in a season best 1:23.32.
Senior Zach Schiavo finished the three-day invitational with five top-five performances. The versatile freestyle swimmer placed second with the 200 and 400-yard freestyle relay teams, as he was the third leg of the 200 and the opening leg of the 400. He was also the anchor of the 200 and 400-yard medley relay teams that finished third.
Andrew Speese posted other top times, as he bested the team’s season mark in the 200-yard butterfly, coming in second in 1:52.89. Ryan Roberts also finished with a season best of 4:39.04 in the 500-yard freestyle, placing fifth.
Stephanie Dodd (above right) led the women swimmers with two second-place finishes, leading the team to 969 points. The junior swam the team’s season best, 16:58.20, in the 1650-yard freestyle event, placing second. She also touched home in second in the 400-yard individual medley in 4:25.32, also the team’s top time for the season. Dodd added a 17th place finish in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing in 1:54.01, another top time for the season. Donna Healy placed 11th in the same event, but had a better preliminary time, placing in the second heat.
In all, the women posted eight season best times over the three-day invitational. Kaitlin Wolla set new season highs in the 100 and 200-yard butterfly events, coming in fifth and third, respectively.
Nicole Osman lowered the time in the 200-yard individual medley to 2:07.41. The final two top times came in the 200 and 400-yard freestyle relay races as the teams came in fifth and fourth, respectively.
Both squads will take a weekend off before traveling to Ohio State to compete in the United State Swimming Short Course Nationals on December 2-4.
