Tori Gillespie Sets New 100 Butterfly Record, as does 200-yard Medley Relay, Women stay in Seventh After Day 3

FAIRFAX, Va. - - The 2011 Colonial Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championships continued into day three on Friday, and through 28 events, the Blue Hen men sit in fifth place overall, while the women stay in seventh with one more day of competition remaining, hosted by George Mason.
There were four more Delaware program records broke throughout the evening, three on the women’s side, but neither team could make the jump in the team standings.
Ryan Roberts set a new record in the 200-yard freestyle event, finishing fourth in the Championship Final. His time of 1:39.47 in the preliminary set the new school record, beating out teammate Robert MacLeish who held the record from 2008-09. He placed fourth in the final with a time of 1:39.72.
Courtney Raw (above right) was the top performer in the standings for the women on Friday, finishing in fourth in the 100-yard backstroke. She gained 15 points for the Blue Hen women in the final but it was her preliminary time of 55.62 that broke the school record previously held by Emily Smathers.
Tori Gillespie raced into the record books in the 100-yard butterfly, setting the pace by nearly half a second while coming in ninth, first in the consolation final. Her time of 55.47 in the consolation final gave the Blue Hens nine points and a spot atop the record books.
The Blue Hen women also set a new time in the 200-yard medley relay by nearly a second and a half. The combination of Raw, Marianne Flynn, Gillespie and Erinne Butler finished sixth, while touching home in 1:43.09.
The men are only 2.5 points behind William & Mary and Old Dominion to move into third place and came on strong in the second half of the night on Friday. They made up some ground in the 100-yard breaststroke, with Michael Wodoslawsky placing a team high second place with a NCAA ‘B’ cut time of 54.40. Ross Buckwalter was right behind his teammate, touching home in third in 54.77, another NCAA ‘B’ cut time. Josh Hyman finished out the scoring in the Championship Final for the event, coming in fifth in 56.34. Overall, the trio picked up 47 points to gain some ground in the standings.
The 200-yard medley relay team of Roberts, Buckwalter, Cole Clark and Zach Schiavo took the silver medal and 34 team points while finishing in 1:30.00, tying Wodoslawsky with the best overall finish for the Blue Hens on the night.
The CAA Championships will conclude on Saturday with the 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, 1650 freestyle and the 400-yard freestyle relay. Preliminaries will start at 10 a.m. with the finals starting at 6 p.m. The Championship Awards Ceremonies will follow the men’s 400-yard freestyle relay event, the last event of the competition.
