University of Delaware Swimming & Diving to Head South to Georgia and Florida; Host Three Meets to Highlight 2011-12 Schedule
July 19, 2011

NEWARK, Del. - - December trips to Georgia and Florida, as well as three home meets in Rawstrom Natatorium, highlight the 2011-12 schedules for the University of Delaware men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams announced Tuesday by head coach John Hayman.
Competition begins in October with the annual Blue-White Intrasquad Scrimmage on the first of the month. The Blue Hens will take on 10 opposing teams in seven meets, along with the Bucknell Invitational, the United States Swimming Short Course Nationals, and a training and competition week in Florida prior to battling for the Colonial Athletic Association Championships in February.
Hayman, beginning his 23rd season at the helm of both Blue Hen teams, will lead UD as the regular season kicks off with a dual meet against Georgetown on Oct. 8 in Rawstrom Natatorium. Both squads will not compete at home following Georgetown until Jan. 14, with bouts at George Mason, the CAA Pod Meet at defending CAA women's champion Towson, a tri-meet at LaSalle, the Bucknell Invitational, the USS Short Course Nationals in Atlanta, and the winter break training session in Florida squeezed in between.
Following the trip to Florida from Dec. 26 to Jan. 2, the Blue Hens make a return trip to the Carpenter Sports Building to take on Drexel while the women will also compete against Northeastern on Jan. 14.
That begins three a stretch of three meets in 14 days for the Blue Hens as they welcome Widener to Newark for a mid-week battle on Jan. 25. The regular season rounds out with a dual meet against CAA foe William & Mary on Jan. 28 in Williamsburg, Va.
The CAA Swimming & Diving Championships will be held Feb. 22-25 at George Mason University's McKay Natatorium in Fairfax, Va. for the 13th consecutive year.
The Delaware men, led by Ryan Roberts who won the 200 backstroke event at the CAA meet a year ago, finished with their best dual record since joining the CAA in 2001-02 when they posted an 11-1 overall dual record with a 6-1 mark vs. CAA foes. The only loss in the regular season came at the hands of 10-time CAA champion UNC Wilmington. The Hens placed third at the CAA Championships for the fourth season in a row.
The UD women, led by Courtney Raw (above right) who finished fourth in the 100 backstroke event at the CAA meet in 2011, finished 8-6 overall and 4-5 in the CAA a year ago. The CAA record could have easily been flipped if it weren’t for a narrow three-point loss to Northeastern and a close 19-point setback vs. William & Mary. The Hens finished seventh at the CAA Championships for the second consecutive season.
