Delaware Women Place Third, Men Second at the Bucknell Invitational; Dodd Breaks Own Program Record

LEWISBURG, Pa. - - Both the University of Delaware men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams put together strong performances at the Bucknell Invitational on November 20-21, as the Blue Hen men finished second overall and the women finished third out of seven teams.
The men gained 1,129.5 points, trailing only host Bucknell in the seven-team invitational. The women collected 1,090.5 points in the two-day event, placing third behind Bucknell and Fordham.
Stephanie Dodd put together the best individual performance for the Blue Hens, as she broke her own school record in the 400-yard individual medley and qualified for the United States Swimming Winter Nationals in the same heat. Dodd beat the field of 24 with a finals time of 4:22.65.
Dodd also touched home in second in two events, qualifying for the USS Winter Nationals in the 1650-yard freestyle event with a time of 16:46.94. She narrowly missed sweeping both individual medley events, finishing 0.81 seconds behind the leader in the 200-yard IM in 2:05.00.
Not to be outdone by her teammate, Hannah Facchine qualified for the USS Winter Nationals in the 100-breaststroke event, beating the field of 28 in 1:04.15. She finished the event with a new personal record, and was the second fastest time in Delaware program history.
The women also stole the show by winning both the 200 and 400-yard medley relay events on the weekend. The Hens opened with a season’s best 3:52.28 in the 400-yard medley relay. Courtney Raw, Facchine, Tori Gillespie and Maggie Tracy followed that performance with another season’s best of 1:46.95 in the 200-yard medley relay.
Facchine added to her medal count with third place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke. She posted the top time of 2:19.77 in the preliminary round, but slipped to third and a time of 2:23.76.
Rounding out the podium finishes for the women was the 400-freestyle relay team of Tracy, Mary Kay Harris, Gillespie and Dodd. They finished third with a season’s best effort of 3:32.92.
On the men’s side, Ryan Roberts scored six top-three performances on the weekend to help bring the Blue Hens to a second place finish in the standings. The diving team also posted three podium finishes to make it a complete team result.
Roberts narrowly missed touching home in first in the 200-yard backstroke, finishing in second in 1:51.54. He than rattled off five separate third-place finishes to lead the Blue Hens.
The junior’s third place finishes included a bronze in the 50-yard freestyle (1:42.87), 100-yard backstroke (51.28), 200-yard backstroke (1:52.02), as well as being the anchor in the 400 and 800-yard freestyle relay teams.
Diver Brian Coonce had a second place showing in the 3-meter diving well, finishing less than six points behind the leader with a score of 312.40. Seth Bergman followed directly behind Coonce, finishing in third with a score of 256.50.
In the shorter 1-meter well, it was Bergman who topped the Blue Hens with a third place showing and a personal season’s best 261.95 points.
Andrew Speese was the final Blue Hen to secure a spot in the top-three, as he raced to a third place finish in the 200-yard butterfly. Speese, the program’s record holder in the event, set the team’s season best time of 1:53.76.
Both the men and women’s teams are off from dual meet action until the Blue Hens return home on January 14 when they take on Drexel. Prior to then, select swimmers will compete in the USS Winter Nationals in Atlanta, Ga. from December 1-3 and the team in train in Florida over the holiday break.
